In 1472, Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, was on an epic campaign against Louis XI. Charles and his army had been busy plundering, raping, and burning their way across the French countryside. They arrived at the town of Beauvais where 300 ragtag militiamen were positioned to defend their town. Obviously, 300 militiamen were not much of a challenge for seasoned warriors and it didn’t take long for the first knight to make his way over the wall. The knight quickly planted the flag of Charles the Bold on top of the rampart. In a rage, teenage Jeanne grabbed a hatchet and hurled herself at the knight. She struck him first in the shoulder and then in the neck, nearly decapitating him. She threw the body off the wall and flung the flag after him into the moat. Her actions reignited the people of Beauvais and they were able to hold off the attack. Louis XI was so impressed with this heroic deed that he instituted a procession in Beauvais called the “Procession of the Assault”. Even today, there is a religious procession through the streets of Beauvais to commemorate Jeanne’s actions.
We definitely do not recommend attacking anyone with a hatchet, or any other weapon for that matter, but we do admire the bravado of Jeanne Hachette (‘Joan the Hatchet’). We designed our mini-hatchet to be the perfect tool for hiking or backpacking. It is a perfect size and weight for lightweight backpacking and will become an invaluable tool to have. The super sharp carbon blade will make it easy to split wood for kindling and fire starting. We left the butt of the hatchet completely flat so it can be used as a makeshift hammer. Perfect for hammering in tent stakes and other camp chores. Hand carved grooves on the throat of the handle will give you a secure grip on the hatchet, even when your hands are wet or when you are wearing gloves. You won’t be disappointed with the exceptional quality of this hatchet.

About Forseti Steel:
The secret to forging authentic Damascus steel knives has long been lost, but Forseti Steel stays as true to the tradition as they can by commissioning smiths with Damascus ancestry to hand-make all of their blades. The artists behind the enamoring water-like patterns of folded and pounded steel have all learned their skills and techniques from the generations that worked the metals before them.
In addition to paying tribute to the Damascus practice in technique and appearance, Forseti Steel shows its respect for history's heroes, legends, and characters with their knives' names. The 9", walnut-handled Sentinel, for example, honors the Sentinels who stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington.
