In the summer of 2013, 19 City of Prescott firefighters, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, lost their lives in the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona. Ignited by lightning on June 28th, and fueled by drought conditions and strong winds, the Yarnell Hill Fire quickly grew to over 8,000 acres. On June 30th, these 19 firefighters were overrun by the raging fire. The hotshots had deployed fire shelters against the oncoming flames but the fire reached over 2,000 degrees and none of the firefighters survived. Tragically, this was the greatest loss of life for firefighters in a wildfire since the Griffin Park Fire in 1933.

We have named this axe in honor of those 19 firefighters that lost their lives. It is with pride and respect that we honor them and their fellow hotshots. The robust D2 steel axe head is meant to used and it is paired nicely with an ash wood handle. The light but firm ash wood is known for its durability and strength (most major league baseball bats are made of ash wood). We ensured the grain is going in the same direction as the axe head for added strength. The carbon steel is double tempered and then dipped in furnace oil to give it the black coating. We also added a custom leather sheath to protect the axe head when not in use. Not only do you get a beautiful piece of craftsmanship but you get a very practical tool as well.

About Forseti Steel:

The secret to forging authentic Damascus steel knives has long been lost, but Forseti Steel stays as true to the tradition as they can by commissioning smiths with Damascus ancestry to hand-make all of their blades. The artists behind the enamoring water-like patterns of folded and pounded steel have all learned their skills and techniques from the generations that worked the metals before them.

In addition to paying tribute to the Damascus practice in technique and appearance, Forseti Steel shows its respect for history's heroes, legends, and characters with their knives' names. The 9", walnut-handled Sentinel, for example, honors the Sentinels who stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington.
