Robert Hoover was stationed in Casablanca during World War II and assigned to the Spitfire 52d Fighter Group. In 1944, Bob’s Spitfire was shot down by a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 over the Mediterranean. Hoover was captured and spent 16 months in the Stalag Luft 1 prison in Barth, Germany. During a staged fight, Hoover was able to escape from the prison camp, steal an Fw 190, which he had never flown, and flew to safety in Holland.
After the war, Hoover joined the Army Air Forces as a test pilot. It was during this time that he became friends with Chuck Yeager. There was so much respect between these two pilots that when Yeager was asked who he wanted for his flight crew for the supersonic Bell X-1 flight, Yeager chose Hoover. The two pilots continued to work together on numerous test flights and many different flight programs.
We chose to name this folder after Robert Hoover because we felt the knife needed to be named after a classic, adventurous gentleman with an incredible life. We like to think that this was the kind of knife Hoover would have carried. Not only are these knives created in the laguiole style but we have made the blade out of 1095 and 15n20 Damascus steel. It adds a little Je ne sais quoi to this style of knife. Available in four different handle finishes, horn, bone, oak, and walnut so you can choose the knife that suits your own personal taste. A bee adorns the backspring, which sits over the rotating part of the blade. The very strong backspring keeps the blade firmly closed or "locked" open when in use. Make sure you watch your fingers when closing the knife as the backspring is very tight.
This knife will be sure to become a keepsake for you and your family. You may find that you need more than one because each knife has so much style. A true masterpiece from a bygone era.

About Forseti Steel:
The secret to forging authentic Damascus steel knives has long been lost, but Forseti Steel stays as true to the tradition as they can by commissioning smiths with Damascus ancestry to hand-make all of their blades. The artists behind the enamoring water-like patterns of folded and pounded steel have all learned their skills and techniques from the generations that worked the metals before them.
In addition to paying tribute to the Damascus practice in technique and appearance, Forseti Steel shows its respect for history's heroes, legends, and characters with their knives' names. The 9", walnut-handled Sentinel, for example, honors the Sentinels who stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington.
