William Becknell was a frontiersman and trader in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Becknell climbed the ranks quickly during the War of 1812 and from his extensive service on the frontier while battling the British-backed Indians. He eventually reached the rank of Captain and was long known as Captain Becknell.
After the military Becknell began trading and working on trade routes. He became the “Father of the Santa Fe Trail” which opened up trade with Mexico. Becknell led many other explorations for new routes and trapping expeditions. Becknell settled in Texas and served as commander during the Texas Revolution and even served briefly as a Texas Ranger. He amassed a sizable estate in land and livestock in Red River and died at the age of 68.
We named this Damascus hunting knife after William Becknell because of the amazing life that he led. It is easy to romanticize a life of exploration on the frontier, but we don’t take it for granted. Becknell lived a very full life and we believe he would have approved of this knife. Medium in size, this modified clip-point blade would be very handy on the frontier. Whether gutting an animal, slicing, or hand-to-hand combat, the clip-point tapers and drops the center axis of the tip so it allows a quicker and deeper puncture. The Micarta handle fits nicely into your hand and a hole in the butt of the knife allows you to add lanyard if so desired. This full-tang Damascus steel knife is a piece of art that is as pleasing to use as it is to look at.
